Breast cancer is the most common cancer among women worldwide. 1 in 8 women will face a breast cancer diagnosis in their lifetime. Early detection saves lives - 99% of breast cancers are survivable if caught early. Yet the tools we rely on haven’t kept pace with the science.

The Problem with the Status Quo

For decades, mammograms have been the default screening method. But mammograms miss cancers in up to 40% of women with dense breast tissue - a group that includes 40 million women in the U.S. alone. Younger women are often left behind, too: insurance rarely covers advanced imaging under age 40, even as rates of breast cancer in this group continue to rise.

The current process is also slow and stressful: book an appointment, wait weeks, undergo a manual exam, then often wait weeks more for results. For many, this means weeks of anxiety before getting real answers.

Bailey’s Story

BeSound was born from lived experience.

While interning at NASA, Bailey Renger, now founder and CEO of BeSound, discovered a solid mass in her breast at just 21. Despite the alarming find, she was told that further imaging wasn’t covered by insurance. That moment sparked a simple but powerful question:

“Why can we see to the edges of the universe, but it’s so difficult to see a few centimeters inside the human body?”

Determined to change this, Bailey combined her scientific training in physics and optics with a passion for healthcare innovation. The result: BeSound.
